What Is Diabetes And How Can It Be Managed?

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to be abnormally high. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational. Type 1 diabetes is a condition that is usually diagnosed in early childhood. This condition occurs when the body cannot produce insulin, which is the hormone that regulates blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that is usually diagnosed in patients over the age of 40, but the number of young people being diagnosed with it has increased drastically over the past few years. Type 2 diabetics produce insulin, but their bodies cannot use. Gestational diabetes occurs only in pregnancy. Health experts believe that the hormonal changes women go through during pregnancy cause this condition.

What are some of the symptoms of diabetes?

Increased thirst, weight loss, fatigue and increased urination. It is important to note that some patients with diabetes may not experience any symptoms. That is why it is important for people to get their blood sugar checked at least once a year.

How can diabetes be managed?

There is no one diabetes cure. Diabetes treatment consists of medical treatments and lifestyle changes. Type 1 diabetes will have to take insulin because their bodies cannot make it.  Type 2 diabetes may or may not have to take insulin, but they will usually have to take medication to control their blood sugar.  Pregnant women with diabetes will usually be prescribed a medication also.

All diabetes will benefit from regular exercise. Studies have shown that regular exercise helps lower blood pressure and increases the cell’s response to insulin. Additionally, exercise also helps promote weight loss. Type 2 diabetes is strongly correlated with being overweight.

Diet for diabetics

Eating a healthy diet can also help patients manage this condition better. The diabetic meal plan should consist of six to eleven servings of whole grains, three to five servings of vegetables, two three servings of fruit and two to three servings of low-fat dairy products. People who have trouble choosing foods from the diabetic food list should consult with a nutritionist.

Contrary to popular belief, there are many delicious snacks that people with diabetes can enjoy. A healthy snack is one that is low in sugar and filled with the nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy. Raw vegetables, chips with beans and salsa dip, fruit smoothie and low-fat cheese are just a few of the many diabetic snacks.

Living with diabetes

Diabetes can be a very frustrating condition, but the good news is that most people with this illness live relatively normal lives. Monitoring one’s blood sugar and visiting one’s doctor regularly are the keys to managing this condition.
